What's up with your team members?

The Challenge

Stop by the desk of a direct report today. Sit down with them for a five-minute check-in. Ask this person, "How is the job going overall? Are you getting what you need from me? How can I help?"

Why do this?

Provide an informal opportunity for members of your team to ask for what they need in order to perform well and contribute to the organization. Often, we assume that we are providing what others need for developing their skills and experience. Sometimes we are wrong; it helps to ask on a regular basis.

This act is part of your long-term effort to lead others effectively by owning your role in their development.

What’s next?

Make it a habit to discuss the job with your direct reports and be on the lookout for development needs.
