How do you effectively transition from one job to another?

The Challenge

Think about the last job you left. How and when did you announce you were leaving? What steps did you take to help transition your work effectively? How did you handle important connections/contacts? What could you have done to better manage your transition?

Why do this?

An accountable employee takes responsibility for ensuring the work continues to get done in his/her absence and documents work processes that will support an uninterrupted workflow.

Saying goodbye to your colleagues is only a small part of transitioning effectively out of a position. Your current colleagues and connections make up a vital part on your ongoing network. Be sure to express your appreciation for all the learning opportunities and support you have received in your current position. Make sure that you do all that you can to ensure a smooth workflow as you transition. This is a time for building bridges rather than burning them.

What’s next?

If you are considering a move, begin creating a transition plan for yourself. If you are not seeking any change, it is still a good idea to think about your work processes and how they could be effectively transitioned in an unexpected absence. Begin documenting significant processes if you have not already done so.
